Karen is a nurse who has dedicated her career helping babies and their families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sunnybrook Hospital. Karen comes with over 30 years of experience caring for both premature and term babies during their journey towards home. She is certified in CPR, neonatal resuscitation and is a Lactation Consultant. She is passionate in building resilience and empowering parents with all newborn care that includes bathing, safe sleep, settling/calming techniques and feeding. As a Lactation Consultant she is able to assist mothers with breast pumping/breast feeding issues. This can include engorgement, low milk supply, blocked ducts, positioning and latch. She is also knowledgeable in teaching feeding cues and safe bottle-feeding techniques.
Karen has a personal passion for breastfeeding. She is able to provide support to families with achieving their feeding goals during their challenging journey towards discharge. Due to the high percentage of mothers who rely on pumping breast milk, she has developed expertise on safe pumping, storage and transport of expressed breastmilk for a NICU infant. She also has knowledge with the donor milk process and has counseled mothers who wish to donate due to oversupply or bereavement.
Karen is knowledgeable, compassionate, and an enthusiastic “baby nurse” who extends herself to meet all the needs of the Family Unit. She recognizes and respects that bringing a new baby home is both a vulnerable and special time for each family member and embraces the establishment of a nurturing environment.
